Travelling is one of the most interesting things a person may experience. While travelling, you will explore new places, come across different cultures, meet new people, make new friendships, learn about different cities, beliefs and traditions, and above all, enjoy your time!
However, travelling to a foreign country with a different language may be intimidating a bit. Do not let this idea affect your travel plans. It is still possible to enjoy your time and get along even with no knowledge of the destination’s language at all.
Here are a few tips I come up with, based on personal travel experiences which I believe will be handy.
Learn Essential words
Try to make learning a few essential words, a part of your travel plan. You can look up useful words & everyday usage such as words used for directions; greetings; showing gratitude;..etc. Also, you may write down useful phrases that may be in use, in restaurants, hotels, cafes and shops.
Keep in mind that wherever you are, people appreciate tourists who show interest in the local language and try to speak it; regardless of how it has been used or pronounced. So, keep using the words you learned, as locals will like your effort, and they will feel honored as well.
Translation Applications
Nowadays, Travelling has become much easier with smartphones. Your smartphone will keep you connected all the time. Therefore, you can download a translation app, and use it to communicate with people.
I would suggest Google translation since it is easy to use. Also, it offers several options for translations. You can write, speak, or take a photo of the required words to translate.
Always, Your Native Language!
Most travelers tend to use the English language for communication wherever they travel since it is a global language. However, if you are a non-native English speaker travelling to a non-English speaking country, keep using your native language, for many reasons.
First, you may come across many similarities between your mother language and the local language. For example, I remember during my first trip to Rome, I was having dinner at a restaurant located on Rome’s outskirts. when I wanted to ask for the bill, I used all the possible ways in English to explain what I need. After losing hope, and without noticing Arabic words came out, and the waitress understood that I need the bill. It turned out that the Arabic word “Fattura” is the same in the Italian language!
Second, if the person you are talking to, cannot speak or comprehend English, it is useless to keep trying. What I have noticed during my travels, people with no knowledge or low level in English may get irritated if you keep speaking English with them. Whiles using your native language, even though they still cannot figure out what you say, will result in different attitudes, and better reactions. As using your language shows that you are simply trying to communicate, not to show off.
It is also important to know that you always need to use simple language, easy to understand, straight forward, and avoid using slang.
Approach Young People
In almost every place in the world, young people speak, to a certain extent, and understand English. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you may encounter young people who speak your language.
Also, since they are curious about foreigners or maybe they want to improve their English language skills, they will show more tolerance to visitors than older people.
Practice Charades Before Traveling!
Non-verbal communication is effective most of the time. You will be surprised how you will successfully get what you need by using only non-verbal communication.
Using your hands to show what you need, or where you want to go will be your best and the only option you have.
Remember, the countries you visit have people just like you. We all think, behave and act the same way. Using a different language does not make us different. Regardless of the country you are visiting, you will always encounter kind and helpful people who will do all they can to show you the best in their beloved home!
