The name Antalya refers to the Mediterranean province in the southern part of Turkey as well as its capital city, Antalya. This province is the second most visited in the country, especially during the summer period. It is famous for its beaches, sunny days, and sea sports activities. When the name Antalya is mentioned, people will immediately picture mountains, beaches, and summer.
However, it is worth mentioning that Antalya has much more to offer than simply splendid nature. If you cannot stand hot and humid weather, and if you are not a beach lover, still Antalya is a perfect choice for a lovely cosy vacation all over the year.
Many reasons drive people to visit Antalya, below are a few of what I consider excellent reasons to attract visitors.
1- Sunny weather
Its climate plays a great role in attracting travellers to visit Antalya even during the dead seasons.
Apart from July, August, and September, Antalya's weather is amazing. It is sunny and cool. You can escape the freezing winter elsewhere and enjoy the spring-like weather in Antalya.
During winter, you may encounter a few days in which its gloomy, cloudy, and cold, but most of the time it is sunny and warmer than other parts of the country.
2- Diversity
Antalya offers diversity in everything, in its culture, people, places and activities that it offers.
There is something for everybody to enjoy regardless of their interest, age and hobbies. If you are a sports lover, you have a lot of options to do, like hiking, golf, rafting, scuba diving, and much more.
If you are a history enthusiast, then Antalya is just right for you. The old town with its old castle, market and harbour is a hidden jewel to explore.
The city is full of many shopping centres that offer varieties of good brands and high-quality goods with reasonable prices which makes Antalya the shoppers' heaven.
3- Historical Ruins
As I mentioned above, if you love history then you need to spend a day discovering its old town, Kaleici. Exploring its old buildings, souvenir markets, and above all its outstanding harbour.
Outside the capital city, lies many of the historical ruins that are worth visiting. One of my favourites is the city of Termessos. It is the ruins of an ancient
town that was built on the Güllük Daği mountain by the Solims. This town has gained its popularity also from Homer's Iliad.
To reach the centre of Termessos and its theatre, you will have to climb up, walking on narrow roads that are alongside old graves. It might be tough to walk through these roads, but once you reach them, the view there is spectacular and worth climbing it.
Heading further to the south towards the coast, there lies the old city of Side which is situated on a small peninsula. It is believed that Side was built by the Greeks. Visitors can enjoy the temple of Apollo by the sea, its small cosy markets, cafes and restaurants and swimming as well.
Other historical places to visit are Olympus, Phaselis, Kekova Island, Simena, Andriake, Nephelis, and Perge among others.
4- People
Antalya’s diversity is also shown in its people. The residents in Antalya are from different races, cities, and cultures. This makes the people of Antalya more open-minded, welcoming, and friendly. They accept differences; hence strangers and foreigners feel more at home.
5- Museums
In Antalya, you will have different types of museums that attract people from different interests. You will not find museums that concentrate on history and archaeology only, but you will enjoy a variety of museums that offer knowledge and fun together.
For example, there are two museums for toys, Antalya Toy Museum, and Anatolia Toy Museum.
Antalya Toy Museum was opened on 23rd April 2011 on Children’s Day. It has over 300 antique toys from all over the world.
Another unique toy museum is the Anatolian Toy Museum which
is located in Kepez. It offers toys from all over the world alongside with Tratidionally Turkish toys. It is a unique experience worth visiting.
Suna & Inan Kirac Kaleici Museum is a small ethnography museum hosted in an antique house in Kaleici.
Ataturk House Museum was opened to the public in 1986 after it was rebuilt. This house is dedicated to the memory of Ataturk visit to the city from 1930-1935. It displays papers, and photos belong to this event and some of Ataturk personal belongings.
Also, in Antalya specifically Side, you can visit the first underwater museum in Turkey. This museum is close to Manavgat area and it has sculptures and ruins displayed for visitors. It is a unique experience to enjoy diving while enriching your archaeological and historical information.
There are also Antalya Culture and arts, St Nikolaos memorial museum, Elmali Museum, Antalya Ethnography museum, and Antalya museum.
6- Costs & Expenses
You can enjoy a luxurious holiday and explore a lot of different places at reasonable prices. Even 5-star hotels in Antalya offer amazing prices and packages compared to the European or other destinations in the area.
Yet, you can save more by staying in one of its cosy antique hotels that offer comfortable stay and services at a very low price.
7- Easy Access
It is really easy to reach Antalya. It has an international airport that operates around the year and to many destinations. Also, being located on the D400 high way makes it very easy to reach it by road. You can rent a car, or take a bus from almost any city in Turkey and visit Antalya.
