Since peak travel periods are during the hot season of the year, Ice cream becomes a necessity to tour under the hot sun on a summer day. I know it is easy to find this summer sweet everywhere you go, but it is rare to find an ice cream that is unique to a particular city or culture. In this post, I will share with you, a list of traditional, unique, and tasty ice cream that is found in the cities I visited.
The Arabic Ice-Cream (Booza), Damascus Syria
What makes the Arabic ice cream or "Booza" unique, is its thick structure. Also, it has Arabic gum, or mastic as one of its main ingredients which gives a delightful taste.
It is made by pounding and stretching in a freezer drum, and its main ingredients are milk, cream, sugar, mastic, and Orchid root flour, which is known as Sahlab. It is usually decorated with green pistachio on the top.
The best Booza can be found in the covered bazaar inside the old city of Damascus. So many locals, visitors and tourists visit Souq al-Hamidiyyeh to get a chance to taste the authentic Arabic ice cream.
It is the perfect choice for you after a long day touring the old city, visiting its old buildings, and monuments, to step into Bekdash, where the famous Booza is served, and enjoy this summer dessert.
The Turkish Ice Cream (Dondurma), Istanbul Turkey
Although Istiklal Street in Istanbul is the famous place for the tastiest Dondurma in Turkey among tourists, Turkish Ice cream did not originate in this city. The origin of Dondurma is from Maraş Turkey, and it is referred to, sometimes, Maraş Dondurma.
It is similar to the Arabic Ice cream in terms of the ingredients, but it is thicker, and it has a high resistance to melting. However, what makes it unique compared to other traditional cold desserts, is the way it is presented.
It is usually sold by street vendors who wear traditional Ottoman clothes, and they sell the Dondurma after a short Dondurma show.
The Italian Ice-Cream (Gelato), Italy
The Italian ice cream or Gelato is fresher and lighter compared to other ice cream types. Also, you will be astonished by the varieties of flavours you have to choose from such as seasonal fruits, all types of chocolates, and nuts.
In the old city of Florence or Firenze, just close to the Ponte Vecchio, there are a lot of Ice cream shops that offer outstanding varieties of Gelato.
In Rome as well, there are a lot of gelaterias that offer fresh fruit gelatos among other delightful flavours. If you would like to try the fresh Italian Gelato, all you need to do is simply explore the old town, and you will come across hundreds of gelateria.
What makes the Gelato so special is the fact that it is, in almost all gelateria, 100 % of natural ingredients such as milk, cream, sugar, and fresh fruits.
It is prepared by mixing its liquid and solid ingredients alongside other specifically added flavours. Then, it will be kept inside the batch freezers.
Tip: It is always cheaper in Italy to order your gelato "to go" instead of "dine-in", plus it is more enjoyable to walk around while enjoying your frozen sweet.
