As always, I enjoyed watching one of Leonardo’s movies, “Don’t Look Up”. It was worth spending almost two hours of my valuable time watching this movie.
I promoted this movie to all the people I knew, and I was excited to get their opinions. However, some came out to me with disappointing remarks and reviews. They refer to this movie as a fantasy movie and since they are not kids anymore, this genre does not suit them.
I started to doubt myself about this movie; did I enjoy watching my favourite actor; so I liked the movie? Or was it really nice?
I reviewed the movie in my mind several times trying to find what would make it a fantasy movie. I like fantasy anyway, so it will still be a nice movie for me. In fact, it will always be a nice movie for me. It is Di Caprio’s by the end of the day!
While recalling every scene in the movie, I recalled scenes that I and the whole world have witnessed, still witnessing, especially in the last two years.
An obvious disaster that people found hard to believe. Some even refused to see its existence. Many referred to it as a conspiracy.
How many times have governments, or people in power manipulated, and still manipulate, people's minds to make them believe what was never there?
Powerful rich people seek their own interests above anything else, willing to destroy anything & everything to get a few extra pennies, and a silly world controlled by greedy or shallow people.
How many incidents, serious incidents, have been analyzed by a 15-year-old YouTuber? And how many grownups have blindly followed this 15-year-old?
I looked at the characters in the movie, a US president who cares about trivial things, and how to make more money than solving a life-death situation instead. The president shifts interest suddenly trying to save the earth from a disaster only to draw people’s attention away from a scandal that would result in losing the election. A corrupt employee takes advantage of his position in the White House to gain a few pennies by selling stuff that is supposed to be free. A CEO of a tech company who knows nothing about science succeeds in taking over people’s support and belief, while the two scientists struggle to make this shallow world listen to them. All these characters exist in our world today, don’t they?
So, what is fantasy or unrealistic about this movie? I asked myself one more time. I was about to reject this idea and declare that this movie is 200% realistic. I was about to say that this movie shows the reality of today. But the ending has changed my opinion.
In reality, people in power enjoy their life. They turn the lives of others into miserable ones, but they still live peacefully. The movie shows a catastrophic ending for the president and allies. They escaped the inescapable death on earth, just to face a different way to die. Not an easy or peaceful way. This is the fantasy that nowadays we are not facing.
So, I believe “Don’t look up” is a mirror of our reality, and our reality has become a dark fantasy that we refuse to admit its existence.
What do you think?
